FROM THE PASTOR
It's Bigger than We Are-Events are coming together which are at the same moment exhilarating and terrifying. What we will be asked to do is bigger than we are and will require more resources than human accounting can safely rely upon. Our property committee and various ministries will ask us to dream some pretty big dreams with them this coming year when it comes time to support our ministries and fulfill our mission. But on top of this is the dream of Zimbabwe.
Ever since we set Vineville North free, I have asked those involved in missions to dream of an international mission trip which our members could go on within five years. I believe that the hand of God was involved when the president of the Baptist Theological Seminary came and spoke to us in February and shared the need of Christians in his country. Accompanying him was Bonnie Dixon who has matched churches with specific needs in Zimbabwe for more than five years. She later returned and spoke at a prayer service. She will return this week and share the needs of the Christian workers in Zimbabwe.
This Wednesday night, Bonnie will present a PowerPoint presentation on the needs of the Zimbabwean people. On Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m., in M-106, she will meet with people interested in learning more about the various ministry projects related to the Seminary and how you might be of help. For those who are interested in taking the additional step of exploring the possibilities of your own involvement, we will have a light lunch and informal discussions afterwards. Bonnie will also be with us during worship next Sunday.
Blood Drive-The American Red Cross will hold a Blood Drive in the Activities Building this Tuesday from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m.
Church Council and Deacons-Meet this afternoon at 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. respectively.

THE WOMEN'S ENRICHMENT MINISTRY is looking forward to their kickoff event, "A Day of Renewal" with Esther Burroughs on Saturday, September 30. We are praying for the impact that this conference will have on the women of this church and the community. Men, we are asking that you commit to pray for us on that day while the conference is taking place. If you will commit to pray for us at a certain 30 minute time frame during the conference, please call Debra Gourley at 922-2828. She will be happy to list you as one who will be praying. Also, you may sign up to pray during a certain time by seeing someone who will be selling tickets. Your support is appreciated. Also, thanks to all the dads who will be taking care of the children so we can enjoy this special day!
SANCTUARY CHOIR "FAVORITES" CONCERT - In the spring of this year, the members of the sanctuary choir were asked to vote on their favorite choir anthems from the last several years. Once voting was over and ballots were tabulated, the choir began preparing for this upcoming concert. Their selections include spirituals, hymn arrangements, anthems with brass and newly composed anthems.
This concert will be the culmination of a wonderful weekend spent with Bob and Esther Burroughs. Please make your plans to invite friends and attend this special worship opportunity. The program is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 1.
SOMETHING TO CONSIDER - There is an interest at Vineville in forming a Kindergarten class, but in order to make a firm decision, we must have a reasonable expectation that there is enough interest to have 6 to 10 students enrolled. The Preschool Committee has asked that a survey be taken among our parents to determine the level of interest.
The class would be mornings only, five days per week. We would hire a teacher who is certified and we would use the same curriculum that is used in the Bibb County public schools. The cost would be approximately $150 per month.
We need to make a decision as soon as possible in order to have this program by next Fall. If you are interested please contact Gyni Wood or use the registration card on your bulletin and drop in the offering plate.
STATE MISSIONS STORIES - Training Leaders - Baptist Bible Institute across the state teach pastors in theology and ministry implementation.
James McCullough believed God called him to be a pastor when he was a young man. However, although he continued to be active in church, he chose another career path. But 17 years ago McCullough accepted his calling from years before and was ordained as a minister in 1993. He continued his "paying day job" at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, but he also became a bi-vocational pastor. He took his new job seriously and wanted to learn to be a better pastor.
After looking at his options and the demands of a full-time job and being a pastor, he discovered the Middle Georgia Baptist Bible Institute and a teacher who had been his mentor for the past 17 years.
In the early 1970's, Dr. I.W. Bowen shared a vision with the Georgia Baptist staff. His vision was to form a Bible Institute for bi-vocational ministers who were not able to go to college or seminary. It would be for anyone who had a desire to learn more about the Bible, said Dr. Bowen, who was then religion professor at Tift College. In 1974, GBC sponsored a weekend session, led by Dr. Bowen and another professor. Fifty people responded that first weekend. So Dr. Bowen became the first teacher at the newly created Bible Institute. The school had no specific location, but met on the Mercer University campus for a while and over the years has moved several times. Of course, James McCullough has attended these classes. Other institutes across the state have been started.
Dr. Bowen, 78, has been officially retired for the past 13 years, but has continued to teach a variety of classes every quarter since 1974 and has missed very few classes during that time.
The Baptist Bible Institutes are partially supported through our gifts to the State Missions Offering. Please pray for this very important part of our State Missions program.
